PUEBLO, Colo. -- Matteo Madrassi secured a fourth place finish in the Pole Vault on Thursday to open up the 2023 NCAA Division II Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the CSU Pueblo ThunderBowl in Pueblo, Colo.
Updates will be made here and on Twitter at
@CPPBroncos throughout the weekend.
In the Men's Pole Vault, starting at the 5.15-meter bar, Madrassi missed his first two attempts, but waived his third attempt to advance to the 5.25m height. Needing to get over the 5.25m bar on his first attempt, he did just that, allowing him to advance to 5.35m. However, Madrassi missed on all three attempts and settled for his second consecutive All-America honor with a fourth-place finish.
In the Women's 4x100 Relay,
Jaelyn Thomas,
Kelsey Ehinlaiye,
Yuna Queniat and
Ayana Fields broke its own school record with a time of 45.15, placing fourth in their heat and seventh overall to qualify for Saturday's final at 4:10 pm PDT.
In the Men's Long Jump,
Deandre Smith set a mark of 7.18 meters on the first of three attempts, fouled on his second, then hit a 7.11 meter line on his third and final try. In the end, he finished 17th in the nation.
In the Women's 400 Meters,
Ayana Fields qualified for the finals on Saturday with a personal-best time of 53.27, placing fifth overall in the event.
In the Men's 400 Meter Hurdles,
Ryan Fields ran a 50.99 and automatically qualified for Saturday's final by finishing second in his heat.
Alessio Sommacal clocked a 52.47, but finished 15th overall and did not qualify for the final race on Saturday.
