ABCA RELEASE | D2CCA RELEASE
POMONA - Within the past week, Cal Poly Pomona senior right-hander
Caleb Reyes has become the unanimous 2023 NCAA Division II West Region Pitcher of the Year, as well as a unanimous All-West Region First Team selection for his first season in the green and gold.
On May 24, Reyes was named the 2023 NCAA Division II Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA) West Region Pitcher of the Year. He then added American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Rawlings West Region Pitcher of the Year accolades on May 31.
Also on May 31, fellow Bronco right-hander
Rhys Stevens was honored as one of four starting pitchers on the 19-player ABCA/Rawlings All-West Region Second Team, marking a second all-region distinction for the fourth-year junior out of Mission Viejo.
Earlier on May 17, Reyes was the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) NCAA Division II West Region Pitcher of the Year and a unanimous first-teamer, while Stevens made that organization's second squad as well. League-wise, Reyes was voted the 2023 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Most Valuable Pitcher, joined on the All-CCAA First Team by Stevens.
A product of Encino, Reyes was one of four starting hurlers on the 16-member D2CCA first team. The transfer from Division III Occidental College is one of four starters on the 17-player ABCA first team.
Reyes finished with a 7-3 win-loss record, 2.67 ERA and 1.02 WHIP. In addition to wins, ERA and WHIP, he also paced the Broncos with 68 strikeouts and 77.2 innings pitched, walking 14 for a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 4.86. Opponents managed just a .223 batting average. CPP went 7-4 in Reyes' starts, and 9-4 over his 13 appearances on the year.
Reyes' CCAA ranks were first in WHIP, second in ERA and walks allowed per nine innings (1.62), third in strikeout-to-walk ratio, fourth in hits allowed per nine innings (7.53) and opposing batting average, fifth in innings, tied for fifth in wins, and sixth in strikeouts. Nationally, the product of Birmingham Community Charter High School in Lake Balboa is 16th in WHIP, 26th in strikeout-to-walk ratio, 28th in walks allowed per nine innings, 37th in ERA and 58th in hits allowed per nine.
Reyes' season was highlighted by a nine-inning complete-game gem in a 6-1 home win over Stanislaus State on April 21. He was involved in all three Bronco shutouts. Reyes picked up two saves for two lengthy relief stints to begin his CPP career, capping solid Stevens starts at home in the first two of those shutouts. He then moved into the rotation and stayed there, and finally took over as the Friday starter for the last three weeks of the regular season. Reyes is the program's first NCBWA, D2CCA or ABCA West Region Pitcher of the Year. Former slugger David Armendariz was the 2014 ABCA West Region Player of the Year.
Stevens went 3-2 with a 3.13 ERA. He made 13 appearances, all 13 of them starts to lead the team. Twelve outings, including each of the last eight, went at least 5.0 frames. He ranks second in the CCAA in opposing batting average (.209), fifth in ERA, tied for fifth in strikeouts looking (21), sixth in innings (74.2), tied for seventh in total strikeouts (67), and eighth in WHIP (1.29).
Stevens is No. 1 in the conference and 17th nationally in hits allowed per nine innings (6.75). He fanned 18 over a pair of combined shutouts in back-to-back non-conference home starts to begin the season in February, and then fired a season-high-tying 8.0 innings without allowing a run on March 11 in a 14-inning, 2-1 victory over CCAA double champion and West Region runner-up Cal State Monterey Bay.
Just like Reyes, Point Loma's Jakob Christian is the unanimous 2023 NCAA Division II West Region Position Player of the Year. The sophomore first baseman slugged a single-season school-record 28 home runs, second-most in Division II.
The ABCA/Rawlings awards are voted on by members of the ABCA, with 13th-year Cal Poly Pomona head coach
Randy Betten on the eight-person committee. The D2CCA, ABCA and NCBWA All-America teams will be unveiled on June 1, June 2 and June 4, respectively.
Cal Poly Pomona finished 29-23 overall and 18-17 in the CCAA, good for fourth place. The Broncos put together a resume that warranted an eighth NCAA Division II Championship berth in the last 11 opportunities under Betten. They were ultimately knocked out by ninth-ranked host Cal State Monterey Bay at the West Regional #1 in Seaside on May 20. CPP has posted a winning overall record in all 12 on-the-field seasons with Betten in charge.
