CLEVELAND - Cal Poly Pomona had 82 student-athletes earn the 2022-23 Academic Achievement Award from the Division 2 Athletics Directors Association (D2 ADA) last Thursday, Aug. 3.
Of the 12 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) institutions, nine had recipients to total 679, with CPP ranking fourth behind Cal State San Marcos (103), Chico State (88) and San Francisco State (85). In all, a record-breaking 19,646 student-athletes from 196 schools were honored. These awards go back to 2007-08.
Criteria includes a requirement for the athletics director to be a current dues-paying member of the D2 ADA, and for student-athletes to have maintained a cumulative grade-point average of 3.5 or higher through a minimum of two years (four semesters) of college.
"This program continues to showcase the amazing student-athletes, and the impactful support of their coaches and staff, across our Division II landscape," said Kirby Garry, director of athletics at fellow CCAA institution Cal State Monterey Bay and new D2 ADA President. "I want to congratulate all the recipients for earning the D2 ADA Academic Achievement Award. While the number of deserving student-athletes continues to increase annually, the number of institutions recognizing these individuals on campus also continues to trend upwards. We look forward to eclipsing the 200-institution barrier next year."
Cal Poly Pomona had 76 D2 ADA Academic Achievement Award honorees for 2021-22. This year's list featured 17 and 14 recipients from the back-to-back CCAA champion Bronco men's and women's track and field programs, respectively. The CPP men's soccer squad also reached double figures at 10, followed by women's soccer with nine.
