RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The Cal Poly Pomona women's cross country team placed 10th at the UC Riverside Invitational on Saturday morning, held at the UCR Agricultural Operations (Ag Ops) Course.
CPP totaled 241 points with 18 squads in the field. Utah Valley was the winner with 20 points. The Broncos were the lone California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) team involved in the six-kilometer invitational competition. They bested several NCAA Division I programs in Utah Tech, Pepperdine, CSUN, Fresno State and host UCR.
Redshirt freshman
Alondra Arias was the first Bronco to come across, timing 21:28.7 in her first collegiate 6K for 38th place, moving up five spots after the 4K mark. Utah Valley's Ari Trimble was the individual winner in 20:03.4.
Junior
Angela Arellano (55th, 21:47.3) and true freshman
Jade Kingston (56th, 21:48.3) came in one after the other. They were followed by sophomore
Vivian Martinez (60th, 21:51.9) and freshman
Chloe Alchin (76th, 22:07.7) as the Bronco point-scorers. Arellano and Martinez turned in personal records, lowering their previous bests of 22.06.7 and 22:32.0, respectively, both from last November's NCAA Division II West Regional in Billings, Mont.
Junior
Paige Moore (126th, 22:57.3), sophomore
Julia Butler (129th, 22:59.5), junior
Arissa Hatcher (149th, 23:35.6), and redshirt freshmen
Shelby Ortega-Hufana (160th, 24:03.8) and
Andrea Guadian (165th, 24:32.1) also competed among the 172 invitational entrants.
Cal Poly Pomona is right back in action next Saturday, Sept. 23, making the trip south to San Marcos for the Cougar Challenge at CCAA rival Cal State San Marcos' Mangrum Track & Field. The women are set for an 8:30 a.m. start to their 6K, followed by the men's 8K at 9:15 a.m.
Bronco Bits: The Broncos were picked third in the CCAA preseason poll, behind two-time reigning league champion Stanislaus State, the first-time West Region victor last November, and perennial power Chico State ... Saturday marked CPP's first UC Riverside Invitational since exactly six years ago on Sept. 16, 2017, when it placed second in the 5K race early in seventh-year head coach
Chris Bradford's first season in charge ... The invitational race also meant the first collegiate 6K for

Samantha Aguilar (2017-22), running unattached in the invitational section, placed 118th in 22:44.3, while two Bronco freshmen later competed unattached in the 5K open race.
