POMONA - Daniel Echeveste of the No. 22 Cal Poly Pomona men's cross country team has picked up a second California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Runner of the Week distinction over the 2023 season's first three weeks, as announced by the league on Monday.

The true junior Pomona native and graduate of Bonita High School in La Verne was again the Broncos' top finisher at the squad's second race of the new campaign, the 42nd Annual UC Riverside Invitational.

Echeveste went two-for-two for personal-best times in the early going of the season, crossing the finish line of the six-kilometer UCR Agricultural Operations (Ag Ops) Course on Saturday morning in 24:10.9 for 17th place. He advanced two spots after the 7.5K marker. Echeveste's previous best for 8K was 24:49.5 from last Oct. 22 in University Place, Wash. On Saturday, he averaged 4:51.9 per mile.

Echeveste's time was the second-fastest among NCAA Division II runners and third-best out of all non-Division I collegiate student-athletes. A total of 215 competitors completed the invitational 8K.

Cal Poly Pomona compiled 153 points to wind up fifth behind only a trio of Division I programs and No. 16 Azusa Pacific. The Broncos finished ahead of Division I squads like UC Irvine, Long Beach State, Pepperdine, Grand Canyon, UC Santa Barbara, Utah Tech and CSUN, as well as CCAA foe Cal State San Marcos in 16th.

Echeveste was the 2023 season's initial CCAA Runner of the Week on Sept. 4 after placing second at the Seawolf Invite. CPP was the winner of the team event at Woodward Park in Fresno.

Cal Poly Pomona is right back in action this Saturday, Sept. 23, making the trip south to San Marcos for the Cougar Challenge at Cal State San Marcos' Mangrum Track & Field. The men are slated for a 9:15 a.m. start to their 8K, following the women's 6K at 8:30 a.m.
