Broncos Pass First Road Test at Rival Azusa Pacific Behind Cuevas Brace, 2-0

AZUSA, Calif. - Junior Jaclyn Cuevas' first collegiate two-goal brace propelled the Cal Poly Pomona women's soccer team to a 2-0 shutout defeat of area non-conference rival Azusa Pacific on Saturday night at the Cougar Soccer Complex.

With its first triumph of 2023, CPP improves to 1-0-1 on the young season. Azusa Pacific, out of the Pacific West Conference (PacWest), fell to 1-1. The Broncos had dropped narrow one-goal decisions to the Cougars in each of past two years, having last defeated APU by an identical 2-0 score back on Sept. 8, 2018, that matchup at home.

Cuevas, who had just provided her first career goal in Thursday night's season-opening 2-2 draw with Westmont at home, doubled that output just 3:58 into Saturday's contest with an unassisted tally.

The Broncos took a 2-0 cushion into the halftime interval as Cuevas scored again off an assist by fellow junior Tara Oper in the 28th minute. Oper now has two assists already in two matches this year, after leading the squad with three in her first go-around in the green and gold in 2022.

Facing her former team, junior transfer Bella Hara notched her first individual clean sheet as a Bronco. She was credited with six saves. Defenders Bella Anderson and Liberty Ortiz also played all 90 minutes in front of her, aiding in the shutout effort.

Hara's counterpart, Maddie Williams, made just one stop in the APU net. The hosts actually outshot CPP on the night, 8-5, and had six attempts on target to three by the Broncos. Cuevas shared the game high of two shots, both going for goals. Her brace was the first in the program since Taylor Scott found the back of the net twice on Sept. 25, 2021, in a 4-2 home victory over Cal State LA.

A total of 25 Broncos saw action in the match.

Cal Poly Pomona continues its tour of the PacWest down in San Diego on Thursday afternoon, Sept. 7, as it takes on No. 18 Point Loma. Kickoff at PLNU Soccer Field is set for 1 p.m. The Sea Lions are favored for third in their league. APU was fourth in that preseason poll.
