No. 19 Broncos Settle for 1-1 Tie with Mines to Begin Colorado Trip

GOLDEN, Colo. - In a battle of two powerhouse programs that both qualified for the 2022 NCAA Division II Championship, the No. 19 Cal Poly Pomona men's soccer team played to a stalemate with Colorado School of Mines, 1-1, on Friday night inside Stermole Stadium.

With the result, CPP moves to 1-0-2 on the young season. Mines, contesting its home opener following another 1-1 tie at Cal State Monterey Bay exactly one week prior, is 0-0-2. The Broncos are favored to win the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), with the Orediggers picked to place second in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) after achieving the league double a year ago. They are in fact six-time defending RMAC regular-season victors.

CPP moved up three spots in Tuesday's first in-season United Soccer Coaches national poll of 2023, while Mines fell from No. 21 in the preseason edition to outside of the top 25, though it is receiving votes.

CPP's Jasper Winslow and Mines' Nathan Dreher traded the first goals of their college careers to get the score to 1-1. Winslow, a fourth-year junior defender out of Los Angeles, put the visitors on top from close range at 28:42, with true sophomore forward Sam Lena providing the setup through a right-sided cross for his second collegiate assist.

Dreher came off the bench to notch the unassisted equalizer at the 59:39 mark. The true sophomore from Bartlesville, Okla., would later see a straight red card in the 79th minute, with Mines forced to play a man down the rest of the way.

Cal Poly Pomona did its best to capitalize, taking six shots and five corner kicks over those final 12 minutes alone, with four attempts on goal in an absolute flurry within a span of 74 seconds. The Broncos also found the woodwork twice before the late ejection, through Mike Moser in the 35th minute and Kevin Hernandez in the 78th.

Sucre Herrera, a sophomore and first-year transfer from Division I Cal State Bakersfield, earned his first start in the green and gold and needed to make a solitary save as CPP outshot the hosts, 21-5, and surrendered only two shots on target while putting 10 attempts on frame of its own. Sophomore Caden Allaire, a first-year Oredigger, made nine stops.

Herrera, Winslow and All-American fifth-year senior center back and team captain Cesar Ruvalcaba played the full 90 minutes.

Cal Poly Pomona concludes its weekend trip to Colorado by taking on Regis University at its Regis Turf Fields facility in Denver on Sunday at 12 p.m. PT (1 p.m. MT). The game can be viewed on the RMAC Network. The Rangers (1-1-1) were fifth in the RMAC preseason poll, and drew 2-2 with No. 9 Cal State San Bernardino in Denver Friday.
