POMONA – No. 24-ranked Cal Poly Pomona defended its home court successfully with two three-set sweeps on day two of the Broncos Fall Classic. CPP opened with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 25-23) victory over Point Loma University and capped the day off with a straight-set win (25-15, 25-22, 28-26) win over Simon Fraser University.
With the wins, the Broncos improve to 6-1 on the year, while the Red Leafs drop to 4-1 overall and the Sea Lions sit at 3-3 on the young year.
In the opener, CPP and PLNU fought a close battle with the Broncos holding a slight 6-to-3 edge on aces and 9-to-4 upper hand on blocks.
Daisy Duke led the Broncos with 13 kills and had three blocks in the match.
Madison Novak posted 11 kills, while
Samantha Campion added 10 and finished with four blocks.
Caitie Mueller dished out 31 assists, while
Avery Percival chipped in 14 digs.
CPP continued to serve well in the nightcap and finished with eight aces – compared to SFU's three – against the Red Leafs.
Campion posted a double-double against SFU, downing 15 kills and 15 digs in the match. She also had two aces and an assist for the Broncos. Mueller also had a double-double with 32 assists and 11 digs for CPP, which saw
Kaitlan Tucker post three blocks.
The Broncos close out the Classic on Saturday with a 2 p.m. match against Azusa Pacific University.
