POMONA, Calif. - The Cal Poly Pomona women's basketball team defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills on Thursday night, improving to 12-5 on the season. The Broncos, led by their dynamic starting five of Jeanette Fine, Sydney Nelson, Andrea Stajic, Breanne Ha, and Kalaya Buggs put on stellar performances, securing a 80-70 victory.
Breanne Ha, along with Jeanette Fine, played a crucial role in the scoring, each contributing eight points in the first quarter alone. The fast-paced action culminated in an impressive 27-18 lead for the Broncos by the end of the quarter, the second-most points for a single quarter this season.
The second quarter saw the Toros narrowing the lead to 29-26 in the opening minutes, but the Broncos responded with resilience. Ha's clutch trey, combined with a well-executed play by Buggs for an open three, extended the Broncos' lead to 37-27. Despite a 9-0 run by the Toros, the Broncos maintained control with Sydney Nelson's layup, heading into halftime with a 43-39 lead.
Leading the charge for the Broncos, Kalaya Buggs was automatic from the free-throw line where she went 15-for-18 and secured 15 of her 25 points. Buggs made significant contributions with six rebounds, four assists, and two steals during her 33 minutes of play. Alongside Buggs, Fine's hard work translated into an impressive 20 points, complemented by four rebounds, four steals, and three assists.
Nelson and Ha also made significant contributions to the scoresheet. Nelson recorded 11 points for the night with six rebounds, an assist, and a block. Meanwhile, Ha added 13 points to the tally, along with two rebounds and four steals.
In the third quarter, scoring experienced a downturn, with both teams tallying their lowest points at only 13 each. Kalaya Buggs' buzzer-beater brought the lead to four points entering the fourth quarter, with the Broncos ahead 56-52.
In a decisive fourth quarter, Andrea Stajic's fadeaway and Jeanette Fine's 20th point midway through the quarter propelled the Broncos to a 66-62 lead. Sydney Nelson's pivotal layup with 3:00 left secured a three-point advantage, which the Broncos quickly extended to a double-digit lead. Despite a tough battle from the Toros, the Broncos sealed an 80-70 victory. The team's overall record now stands at an improved 12-5, with an impressive 8-4 in conference play.
