Late Heroics From Toros Leads to Overtime Heartbreak

POMONA, Calif. – The Broncos dropped a heartbreaker on Thursday night, falling to Cal State Dominguez Hills in overtime. With the loss, the Broncos fall to 5-11 on the season and 4-8 in CCAA play while sitting tied for sixth in the CCAA standings.

The Green & Gold continued their recent stretch of strong play, having won three of their past four games entering Thursday night. The Broncos went toe-to-toe with the first-place Toros in the first half, sitting even at 41-41 after the first 20 minutes of play.

The second half proved to be a thrilling one with a staggering 10 lead changes between the two teams. With the score at 84-83 in favor of the Toros with one minute to go, Malachi Murrell hit a jumper to put the Broncos ahead by one. Brandon Porter and Jaden Winfield each contributed one good free throw over the next 50 seconds, putting CPP ahead 87-84 with just nine seconds left in the game. With the clock winding down to zero, Jeremy Dent-Smith sunk a step-back three for the Toros to miraculously tie the game at 87-87 – sending the game into overtime. Both teams finished with 46 points in the second half, the most in a half for the Broncos this season.

Overtime proved to be a challenge for CPP, as the offense was unable to land any of their eight shots in the five minute period. With momentum on their side, the Toros scored 14 points to the Broncos' zero, including three more treys from Dent-Smith, to secure the 101-87 win. Dent-Smith was undoubtedly the hero of the game, as he tied a school record with nine treys. His 41 points also ranks second in a game in CSUDH history.

The Broncos saw double-figures from four of their players – Murrell, Winfield, Bam Johnson, and Chris Gayles Jr. With four baskets beyond the arc, Johnson set a career-high in three-point field goals made. CPP outperformed CSUDH in multiple categories, including 23-16 in points off turnovers, 34-6 in bench points, and 16-8 in second chance points.
