POMONA, Calif. - Senior midfielders
Mike Moser and
Max Laguna scored near the end of the first and second halves to lift seventh-ranked Cal Poly Pomona over Cal State Monterey Bay, 2-0, in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) men's soccer action on Sunday afternoon at Kellogg Stadium.
The victory breaks a string of two straight draws as CPP improves to 6-1-2 overall and 1-0-1 in the CCAA. Cal State Monterey Bay drops to 3-2-3 overall and 0-1-1 in league play. The well-regarded Broncos and Otters were favored for second and third, respectively, in the CCAA's preseason poll, with CPP earning one of 12 first-place votes. Both teams had drawn 1-1 in their conference openers on Friday.
Through the first 40 minutes of Sunday's contest, CPP allowed just a single shot attempt to the Otters, that in the 10th minute, with fifth-year senior Hugo Vargas-Rios' effort blocked away. The Broncos had juniors
Woody Angell and
Jakob Singh get denied by CSUMB's sophomore goalkeeper Sean Mattivi among their 11 tries.
Then finally at the 40:51 mark, it was 1-0 in favor of the hosts, as Moser, a native of Switzerland, fired left-footed into the bottom left of the frame for his third goal of 2024 and eighth in the Green and Gold. The tally went down as unassisted. It would also later become Moser's second game-winner this year, and third for his CPP days.
Early in the second half, CSUMB generated its first shot on target of the day, through Vargas-Rios in the 58th minute. That meant fourth-year junior Bronco net-minder
Luke Garciduenas' first save in 218 minutes
Just like in the first period, Cal Poly Pomona produced a late score in the second, this one the three-point clincher at 82:29 from Laguna. Junior striker
Mads Frederiksen set him up with his team-leading third assist, the ball going to the bottom right of the frame. Laguna, a fifth-year Bronco, has three goals this season and a milestone 10 for his career.
Angell, the reigning CCAA Offensive Player of the Week, led all players in shots for the second straight game, providing five after a career-high six two nights prior. He has started all nine contests in 2024 and generated multiple shots in each one, with five or more three times. The Englishman now shares the league lead with his season total of 31.
Garciduenas finished with a trio of second-half saves for his single-season career-best fifth shutout, and first since Sept. 22, also at home. The Pomona product now has 10 clean sheets as a collegian. Mattivi had a career-high five stops in his third consecutive start for the Otters.
In the end, the Broncos out-shot their two visiting opponents this weekend by the remarkable tally of 45-6, including 20-4 on Sunday, which marked their third 20-shot performance of the current campaign.
