ROHERNT PARK, Calif. – The nationally-ranked Broncos remained atop the CCAA standings with a 3-1 win over Sonoma State on Saturday afternoon, improving to 12-1 on the season and a perfect 6-0 in conference play.
Sophomore
Sarah Ybarra had a career weekend, setting career-highs in both digs (24) on Thursday and kills (24) on Saturday. The La Habra native turned in double-double performances in both matches, to go along with four aces, four assists, and a block. Ybarra averaged an impressive 5.25 kills per set and 4.50 digs per set on the weekend.
Senior libero
Avery Percival became the ninth Bronco to record 1,000 digs in her Cal Poly Pomona career on Saturday, leading the team with 15 to bring her CPP career total to 1,008. She ranks ninth all-time in career digs, and is likely to climb the leaderboard quickly in the next few weeks. Including her stats from her freshman season at Hawai'i Pacific, Percival now has 1,311 digs in her collegiate career.
The Broncos dropped the first set by a score of 25-23. After Sonoma State took a commanding lead by rattling off seven consecutive points early in the set, the No. 7 Broncos were never able to catch up. Despite coming within one point at the end, the Seawolves prevailed.
CPP responded in the second set, going on a 10-1 run thanks to three aces and four Seawolf mistakes. The Broncos maintained the comfortable lead, reaching as high as 12, as they took the second set 25-13.
The third set was closer, seeing the score at 15-13 in favor of the Green & Gold. The Broncos swung at a match-best .438 clip in the set, propelling them to go on a 10-2 run to close it out.
Helen McMullin delivered back-to-back kills for the final two points, securing the 25-15 win.
Cal Poly Pomona closed out the match with another 25-15 win in the fourth and final set, with Ybarra recording six kills. It was the Broncos' 12
th win of the season, as they remain in first place in the CCAA standings with a 6-0 record.
Alexia Athans and
Samantha Campion each recorded nine kills, while
Caitie Mueller recorded a season-high 11 digs.
