Rangel Deals, No. 24 Broncos Slug Their Way to Series Opening Win in Santa Barbara

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team defeated Westmont in their first matchup in nearly 59 years on Thursday afternoon, winning by a score of 12-2 in the series opener. The two teams had not faced one another since 1965, before NCAA Division II even existed (established in 1973). With the reigning NAIA national champions making the transition to NCAA DII this season, the two squads faced off at Russell Carr Field in Santa Barbara, CA.

The Bronco bats continued their hot start to the year, collecting double digit hits for the third time in their first five games. Junior Jack Sanders once again powered the offense, going 3-for-5 with a home run, two doubles, and four RBI. Sanders is hitting a blistering .412 with a 1.356 OPS in his first 17 at-bats.

Marco Malerba and Jacob Lopez joined Sanders with multiple hits in the game, while nine different CPP batters collected at least one hit. Brent Cota launched his first career home run while wearing the Green & Gold in the top of the seventh inning, in what would prove to be the final run of the game. Anthony Gibbons, Julian Angulo, Darius Price, and Sanders also each hit doubles in the game.

Caleb Reyes started on the mound, throwing 2.0 innings while allowing two runs to score on three hits. Edrian Rangel entered the game out of the pen in the third, and was automatic from the first pitch – throwing five scoreless innings and allowing just one hit. The Pomona native struck out four batters and picked up his first win since the 2022 season.

Veteran right-hander Drew Atherton threw the eighth inning, not allowing a base runner while recording one strike out. Freshman two-way player Anthony Vasquez made his collegiate debut on the mound in the bottom of the ninth, retiring the side and striking out two to secure the victory.

With the win, the No. 24 ranked Broncos improve to 4-1 on the season.
