CLAREMONT, Calif. – The CPP men's track & field team competed in the Rossi Relays on Saturday in Claremont, CA, finishing second in a field of 13 teams with 147 points. Host Claremont-Mudd-Scripps narrowly beat out the Broncos for the top spot in the meet with 147.5 points. Cal State LA was the next closest school in third place with 101 points. In total, the Broncos finished first in seven different events.
The 4x100 relay team consisting of
Ekene Onwaeze,
Deandre Smith,
Joshua Johnson, and
Colin Quinn broke the school record, running a time of 40.20. That mark was good enough for a first place finish in the meet, as well as earn an NCAA DII provisional mark (40.91 for 2024). The previous school record of 40.31 was set just last season by a relay team also consisting of Smith and Johnson.
Alessio Sommacal and
Matteo Madrassi each earned NCAA provisional qualifiers, Sommacal with a time of 14.24 in the 110 meter hurdles and Madrassi with a mark of 4.85 meters in the pole vault. Both finished first in their respective events in the meet.
In addition to the 4x100 provo, the 4x400 relay team consisting of
Jake Tilford,
Leroy Crook,
Evan Josephson, and Sommacal also earned an NCAA provisional qualifier with a time of 3:13.55 (3:13.85 for 2024), finishing first out of 10 teams.
The Broncos dominated the men's 3000 meters, seeing
Francisco Zavaleta finish first with a time of 8:19.39 out of 48 runners.
Nicholas Albro (5
th, 8:32.42),
Juan Ramos (8
th, 8:36.76), and
Leandro Candray (10
th, 8:39.30) also finished Top 10 in the event.
Alan Rennie won the men's discus with a distance of 45.28m in his first meet for Cal Poly Pomona. The junior also finished sixth in shot put (13.00m) and 14
th in the hammer throw (33.61m). Sophomore
Mar'Agen Fowler had top four finishes in each of his three events, finishing second in hammer throw (53.04m), third in shot put (14.83m), and fourth in discus (42.98m).
The seventh first place finish on the day came from the 800 meter spring medley relay team, where Quinn, Johson, Tilford, and Crook finished on top with a time of 1:31.60. A second Bronco team finished close behind in third place, that one consisting of
Darryll Stevens,
Collin Harris,
Evan Josephson, and
Camden Patterson with a time of 1:32.74.
