Broncos Drop Series Finale to Wildcats

POMONA, Calif. – The CPP baseball team dropped the series finale against Chico State on Sunday, falling to 6-6 on the season and 2-2 in conference play.

Pitching dominated the start of the game, seeing just one hit from both teams through the first four innings. Aren Alvarez started on the bump for the Broncos, allowing just two base runners during that stretch.

The middle innings proved to be different, as both teams plated two runs in the fifth. After the Wildcats scored two runs on two hits in the top of the inning, the Broncos responded with back-to-back triples from AJ Nimeh and Nick Lugo, bringing the score to 2-1. Brent Cota then pushed across Lugo on a groundout to third base, evening the game at 2-2. Cota now leads the team with 10 RBI on the season.

Chico State then took an aggressive lead in the top of the sixth inning, scoring four runs on four hits to take a 6-2 lead – where it would remain for the rest of the game.

Both lineups would stall out in the final three and a half innings, seeing just one hit by Jack Sanders in the bottom of the sixth. The Broncos' four hits on Sunday are tied for the second fewest this season.

Alvarez would finish with a line of 6.0 innings pitched, six earned runs, four strikeouts, and two walks on 80 pitches. Chris Fields was electric out of the bullpen, throwing three scoreless innings to finish the game and allowing just one base runner on a hit by pitch. The junior now has a 2.70 ERA with two earned runs in 6.2 innings out of the bullpen this season, including three scoreless outings.
