POMONA, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team split their doubleheader with San Francisco State on Thursday, remaining .500 on the season with a 13-13 overall record and ranking fifth in the CCAA standings. The Gators now own a 19-11 record on the year, holding steady at second place in the conference.

Game 1: CPP 11, SFSU 1
The Gators got on the board in the top of the first inning with an RBI single, but it would prove to be their only offensive production for the entire game. Bronco starting pitcher
Caleb Reyes shut down the Gator bats from then on, allowing a total of six hits, zero walks, and the one earned run across 7.0 innings. Despite hitting a career-high four batters, Reyes was able to keep SFSU from scoring to lower is ERA to 2.08 on the season – ranking first in the CCAA this season. He also ranks first in fewest hits allowed (among qualified pitchers) and second in lowest opponent batting average (.223).

Carlo Flores closed out the final innings, not allowing a baserunner in 2.0 innings of work. The junior out of Highland has not allowed a run in his first two outings of the season, while also not allowing a hit in that span.

Tyler Chaffee helped kickstart the Bronco offense, launching a three-run home run to left center field in the bottom of the first for his second home run of the season and the 12
th of his career. Junior
Beau Betten added on with a solo shot to left field to lead of the fourth inning, his first as a Bronco. CPP would go on to score seven more runs in the middle innings, taking a commanding 11-1 lead.
Jack Sanders led the offense with three hits in the game, while eight of the nine batters in the starting lineup recorded at least one hit.

Game 2: CPP 1, SFSU 5
Pitching dominated the second game of the doubleheader, seeing two masterful performances from starters
Rhys Stevens and David Eichhorn. Stevens allowed just three hits and zero earned runs in 7.0 innings of work, while also striking out a season-high six batters.

The game remained scoreless through the first five innings, Stevens having only allowed two hits and Eichhorn allowing four. In the top of the sixth, SFSU broke through with a sacrifice fly to left field, picking up the first run of the game.

CPP's offense would continue to struggle in the latter stage of the game, putting up zeroes in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings. In the top of the ninth, two costly errors by the Bronco defense with two outs would allow San Francisco State to gain control of the game, taking a 5-0 lead.

Anthony Gibbons made things interesting in the bottom of the ninth with a leadoff double and later scoring, but it would be the lone run for the Broncos in the nightcap as they would fall by a final score of 1-5.

The Broncos and Gators will play another doubleheader tomorrow, March 29
th, with first pitch set for 12:00 PM. The first game will be nine innings, while the second game will be seven innings.
