Game 2: CPP 8, CSUMB 9
After CSUMB jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, the Broncos got on the board in the top of the fourth inning, scoring two runs on two hits.
AJ Nimeh singled through the right side, scoring
Anthony Gibbons for CPP's first run of the game. After
Brent Cota walked to load the bases,
Marco Malerba followed that with a walk himself, scoring
Darius Price and making the game 3-2.
The Broncos would take the lead in the sixth inning, scoring three more runs on two hits. Nimeh doubled to open the frame, then three consecutive walks by the Otter pitching staff allowed another run to score. Coincidentally, Malerba earned another RBI via a bases loaded walk after doing so in the fourth. A
Jacob Lopez single to center field, and a
Jack Sanders bases loaded walk, would give the Broncos a 5-3 lead by the end of the inning.
Monterey Bay made it interesting in the seventh, scoring three runs on four hits to regain the advantage. However, Malerba came up big for the Broncos in the top of the eighth inning with his first home run of the season, a two run shot to right field that gave CPP a late 7-6 lead. The Otters would not back down, responding with three more in the bottom of the inning to take the final lead of the game, ultimately winning by a score of 9-8.
Rhys Stevens started on the mound for CPP, delivering 6.0 innings with four earned runs while striking out five on 102 pitches.
AJ Moreno took the loss after allowing two earned runs in 0.2 innings, his first loss of the season.
Game 3: CPP 2, CSUMB 17
The CPP pitching staff struggled to get outs in the first game on Sunday, with each of the four pitchers allowing at least three earned runs. Starting pitcher
Aren Alvarez took the loss after going 3.1 innings and allowing six earned on eight hits.
Anthony Vasquez,
Drew Atherton, and
Andrew Campbell threw the remaining 4.2 innings, having similar luck to Alvarez. In total, the pitching staff allowed 17 runs on 20 hits, all earned.
The Bronco bats also struggled to get going, recording five hits in the contest. Shortstop
Nick Lugo collected his second multi-hit game of the season, going 2-for-3. Gibbons doubled to right center field in the top of the first inning, his third of the season. Nimeh and Sanders accounted for the final two hits in the game, both singles.
Game 4: CPP 4, CSUMB 16 (7 innings)
The second game of the doubleheader proved to be just as challenging as the first, with the Otters scoring 16 runs in the 7-inning game. Monterey Bay jumped out to a quick lead, making the score 6-0 on three home runs in the first three innings.
Jack Sanders smashed his fourth home run of the season in the top of the fourth inning, the first pitch of the at-bat that he ambushed over left field fence.
The nationally-ranked Otters responded to the Broncos' comeback efforts in a big way, scoring seven runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a controlling 13-1 lead. Cal Poly Pomona finished the game with four runs on seven hits, an improvement from the first game of the day. However, with the offensive display from Cal State Monterey Bay, it was too much to form a comeback.
Starting pitcher
Edrian Rangel took the loss in the final game of the series, falling to 2-1 on the season. Of the Broncos' three relievers –
Evan Adolphus,
Dylan Esquival, and
Ruben Del Castillo – Esquival was the only pitcher to deliver a clean inning, retiring the side on 14 pitches.
The Bronco's -27 run differential on the weekend was one of their tougher series in recent memory, and their 55 runs given up is the most allowed in a four game set in the past 10 years.
