5/14/2024 9:00:00 PM

INDIANAPOLIS – Both the Cal Poly Pomona men's and women's track and field teams will be competing in the 2024 NCAA Division II National Championships, it was announced on Tuesday afternoon. Thirteen Broncos were selected to participate from May 23-25 at Francis G. Welch Stadium in Emporia, Kansas, including four women and nine men in their respective events.

On the women's side, Ayana Fields will compete in the 200 meters and 400 meters as an individual, as well as the 4x400 relay with teammates Jaelyn Thomas, Yuna Queniat, and Ari Milton. This same foursome made an appearance at nationals last year, placing sixth with a time of 3:38.81 to set the current school record.

For men's track, Ryan Fields and Alessio Sommacal will run in both the 110-meter Hurdles and the 400-meter Hurdles, with both currently ranking Top 12 in the nation in both events. Fields is also the favorite in the 400-meter hurdles, as his time of 49.96 this past weekend is the fastest mark in all of NCAA Division II this season. Lorenzo Boyd will compete in the 100-meter dash, after breaking the CPP record at 10.23 seconds to rank eighth in the nation. The men's 4x100 relay team of Sommacal, Deandre Smith, Joshua Johnson, and Colin Quinn were selected with a time of 39.98, just six tenths of a second behind the national leader in the event.

The Broncos will also compete in three field events on the men's side, including Matteo Madrassi in pole vault – who placed fourth at nationals last season. Darius Hill will compete in the long jump, after jumping 7.64 meters to win the CCAA title earlier this month. Justin Cardoza will round out the field athletes, competing in the triple jump.

The Cal Poly Pomona women have posted 11 individual national championships in program history. The most recent individual titles came in 1998 when Tabreshia Lawrence won the 400m Hurdles and Ruth Moecks won the Triple Jump. On the men's side, the Broncos have nine individual national championships in program history. Most recently, Justin Ellerbee won the Pole Vault in 2015.
