EMPORIA, Kansas – The Broncos competed in five events during day one of the 2024 NCAA Division II Outdoor National Championships in Emporia, Kansas.
Junior
Darius Hill placed 16
th in the long jump, which was the first finals event for CPP at the National Championships. The Murrieta native's best jump came on his first attempt, reaching 7.14 meters.
On the prelims side, the 4x100 relay team of
Alessio Sommacal,
Deandre Smith,
Joshua Johnson, and
Colin Quinn placed 12
th with a time of 40.54. Because they did not finish in the top eight of the event, the relay team did not qualify for Saturday's finals.
Ayana Fields set a personal record in the 400 meters on Thursday, running 53.25 for the third-fastest time in program history. She shaved .02 seconds off from her previous best of 53.27, which she ran at the DII Outdoor Championships in 2023. Fields' seventh-place finish qualified for the finals on Saturday at 1:15 PM PDT.
Lorenzo Boyd ran a 10.27 in the 100 meter dash, placing 15
th in the nation. Boyd's 2024 season comes to a close, having broken the CPP school record in the 100m at 10.23 during the Franson Last Chance meet earlier this month.
Ryan Fields (51.48) and
Alessio Sommacal (55.28) rounded out day one with the 400 meter hurdles, placing 4
th and 16
th, respectively. Fields advances to the 400 meter hurdle finals on Saturday at 2:10 PM PDT, while both Fields and Sommacal will compete in the 110 meter hurdle prelims tomorrow at 4:35 PM PDT.
All-Americans
Student-athletes earn First-Team USTFCCCA All-American honors by virtue of finishing among the top-eight in their respective events – including as a member of a relay team – at the NCAA DII Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Second-team selections are given to those athletes who finished in spots Nos. 9-12 in individual events. Ninth and tenth-place relay teams also earned the distinction.
