POMONA, Calif. - Tenth-ranked Cal Poly Pomona scored just 201 seconds in and ended up producing a season-high three goals by halftime to coast over Colorado School of Mines, 3-0, in a non-conference men's soccer match on Sunday afternoon at Kellogg Stadium.
With the victory to wrap up a perfect home weekend, CPP rises to 4-1. California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) head coaches voted the Broncos second in their preseason poll. Mines returns to Golden, Colo., at 1-5, having also been routed at No. 3 Cal State LA on Friday night, 4-1, to kick off its California trip. The Orediggers were picked fifth in the 11-team Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC).
Sunday's result means sixth-year Cal Poly Pomona leader
Matt O'Sullivan is now the winningest head coach in program history with his 55 in charge of the Green and Gold. Current UC Irvine head coach Yossi Raz had gone 54-17-12 from 2013-16.
The Broncos' afternoon began with their earliest goal of this young 2024 campaign, as junior midfielder
Woody Angell hit the upper right of the frame at just the 3:21 mark on the first shot of the contest by either side. For the native of Alton, England, it was a team-leading third goal on the year, all game-winners for a share of the conference's top spot, and eighth career tally. Angell now has five career deciders.
The visitors generated their first shots in the 11th minute, but back to back, Marc Zimmermann was turned away by the crossbar and Charlie Newberry by fourth-year junior CPP goalkeeper
Luke Garciduenas.
Cal Poly Pomona doubled its advantage in the 16th minute, earning its first penalty kick of the season with fifth-year senior playmaker
Max Laguna converting the opportunity. It was Laguna's first goal this year, eighth of his career, and first collegiate regular-season penalty try.
Just over three minutes later at 18:11, the result was all but put out of doubt. Junior striker
Mads Frederiksen finally opened his 2024 scoring account off of an assist from Laguna. Frederiksen's goal marked the sixth of his college days.
Garciduenas made two saves between the CPP posts for his single-season career-high-tying fourth shutout already. The Pomona product has nine total clean sheets as a Bronco. Sophomore Peter Saunders made a career-high-tying six stops for Mines in his season debut. Junior Caden Allaire, who had played the entirety of the Orediggers' first five matches, took over for the second half and added two saves.
The Broncos compiled double-digit shots in a half for the first time this season with 10 over the first 45 minutes. They finished with a season-high 17 attempts to nine by Mines. CPP also achieved its season best of nine corner kicks, while giving up only two to the opposition.
