CLAREMONT, Calif. - Cal Poly Pomona men's cross country ran away with the team crown at the Pomona-Pitzer Cross Country Invitational on Saturday morning at Pomona College's Rains Center course, scoring 26 points with seven Broncos placing inside the overall top 15. CPP's scoring five combined for a total time of 2:03:29 and a 24:41 average for the 8K, finishing ahead of The Master's (49) and host Pomona-Pitzer (57) in a 20-team field.
Junior
Ricardo Vargas led the charge with a runner-up finish in 24:36.1, just a half second off the individual title. He was followed closely by fellow juniors
Juan Ramos (fourth, 24:40.2) and
Jimmy Guerrero (fifth, 24:40.4).
Seniors
Daniel Echeveste (seventh, 24:45.7) and
Francisco Zavaleta (eighth, 24:47.5) completed a decisive 2–4–5–7–8 scoring punch that broke open the race by the midpoint and never relented. Senior
Jacob Shirota added key displacement in 10th at 24:58.5, and senior
Chris Razo closed the top seven in 15th at 25:18.8.
Depth carried through the lineup as first-years
Micah Clemons (16th, 25:24.9) and
Luke D'Elia (18th, 25:35.0) finished inside the top 20, with additional Bronco finishers including
Micah Chandler (25th, 25:51.0),
Nathan Sackett (32nd, 26:02.6),
Thomas Doherty (36th, 26:07.3),
Derek Ynfante (54th, 26:38.6),
Trajan Cephas (68th, 27:00.3) and
Mason Colwell (183rd, 29:56.9).
Cal Poly Pomona's front pack established control early and maintained separation over the final miles, showcasing the program's strength up front as well as its depth.
