KENOSHA, Wis. - Cal Poly Pomona closed the 2025 cross country season with an 18th-place team finish at the NCAA Division II Men's Cross Country Championships on Saturday morning at the Wayne E. Dannehl National Cross Country Course. The Broncos totaled 500 points over the 10,000-meter layout, placing 18th out of 34 teams.
Junior
Ricardo Vargas led the way with a superb 21st-place finish in 30:23.6, securing USTFCCCA All-America honors with his Top 40 finish. He is the first runner to earn the honor since Ruben Dominguez did so in both 2016 and 2017.
Senior
Francisco Zavaleta was CPP's second scorer, crossing in 31:45.7 for 105th overall, followed closely by seniors
Tom McDonnell in 31:54.0 (116th) and
Juan Ramos in 32:04.2 (134th). Senior
Jacob Shirota rounded out the scoring five at 32:41.8 (199th), giving Cal Poly Pomona a 1-5 spread of just over two minutes on the national stage. Junior
Jimmy Guerrero added a 33:00.7 effort (218th), while senior
Daniel Echeveste was unable to finish.
Today's performance marks the 12
th time in the team's 25 trips to nationals that they have finished in the Top 20. With multiple returners from the scoring group and valuable national-meet experience banked, CPP is positioned to build on this foundation in 2026 and continue competing among Division II's elite.
Bronco Bits
- The Broncos currently have a 104-28 record this season. A "win" is a team they finished ahead of, while a "loss" is teams they finished behind.
- Head coach Chris Bradford's teams have a 635-222 record since 2017.
- Saturday was Ricardo Vargas' 11th top finish for CPP in a race, ranking fourth-most all-time.
- The Broncos have now made the NCAA National Championships in three straight seasons.
- This was the third time the Broncos had ever raced in Kenosha for the National Championships, having done so in 1983 and 1997.
- With Wingate's national title, CPP remains the most recent national champion from the west region.
