Shutout Victory Sends Broncos to Third Round of NCAA Tournament

POMONA, Calif. - A dominant postseason performance propelled the Broncos into the NCAA Third Round, as they secured a composed 2-0 victory over Simon Fraser in the West Region Semifinal. The match showcased discipline, teamwork, and confident play on both sides of the ball, with CPP outshooting SFU 18-9 and earning its 11th shutout of the season behind a connected defensive effort and goals from Vanessa Cruz and Marisa Salazar.

CPP opened the match with strong attacking intent, generating early pressure through sustained midfield possession and repeated opportunities in the final third. Early shots from Braedyn Kincade and Vanessa Cruz tested the SFU goalkeeper, who made several saves to keep the match level. The Broncos finally broke through in the 33rd minute when Cruz finished a well-earned chance following sustained pressure. Reflecting on the mindset entering the match, defender Georgia Rink said, "I think we just went in there knowing that we had to put it all out there, that we couldn't have any expectation for the game. And that's exactly what we did. We went out and we gave it everything we had."

The second half saw Simon Fraser push forward with more urgency, but Cal Poly Pomona's defensive shape and communication held firm. Center back Mikaela Marr credited the group's cohesion, noting, "Honestly, I think that we just played together… we all felt really connected. I think we defended as a unit and we were communicating." The Broncos limited SFU's high-quality chances, and goalkeeper Jenna Tetrault finished with three saves to secure the shutout.

CPP sealed the result in the 78th minute when Salazar doubled the lead off an assist from Kincade, giving the Broncos the cushion they needed to close out the match with confidence. Midfielder Abria Smith spoke to the significance of the victory, saying, "It means a lot, and we're definitely going to use it as a motivation going into the next game, and we're just going to build on it."

With the win, Cal Poly Pomona improves to 16-2-3 and will host Azusa Pacific in the NCAA Third Round and West Region Final. The Broncos head into the next round carrying momentum, unity, and the belief that has fueled their postseason success.
