Broncos Find Long Ball in Doubleheader Split

CARSON, Calif. – The Broncos split their doubleheader with the Toros on Sunday, moving to 8-16 on the season and 5-10 in CCAA play. Sunday's win marked the first road victory of the season for CPP, while also snapping a four game losing streak.

Game 1: CPP 16, CSUDH 12
In an offensive showdown, Cal Poly Pomona erupted for 16 runs on 15 hits to power past Cal State Dominguez Hills in the first game of the doubleheader for their first road victory of the season. The Broncos slugged their most home runs in a game this season, seeing a pair of long balls by first baseman Marco Malerba as well as Robbie Treto's first in the Green & Gold.

After a scoreless first inning, Cal Poly Pomona broke through in the second with a four-run outburst. Treto worked a bases-loaded walk to bring in the first run, and RBI singles from Gage Gonzales and Beau Betten helped the Broncos take an early 4-0 lead. However, the Toros responded immediately, tying the game with four runs of their own in the bottom half.

Dominguez Hills took a 7-4 lead in the fourth, but the Broncos answered with a five-run fifth inning to reclaim momentum. Malerba and Anthony Gibbons delivered key RBI hits, while Treto capped the rally with a two-run double to put Pomona ahead 9-7.

The Broncos continued their offensive onslaught in the sixth, adding six more runs. Malerba crushed a three-run homer to right field, and Treto followed with a two-run blast to left-center, extending the lead to 15-7.

Despite late pushes from the Toros, Cal Poly Pomona's pitching staff held firm. Andrew Campbell (1-0) earned his first win of the season, tossing four innings in relief while allowing three runs.

Malerba finished with a monster game, going 3-for-5 with five RBIs and two homers. Treto also drove in five runs, while Gibbons added three hits and two RBI.

Game 2: CPP 2, CSUDH 6
The Broncos couldn't pull off the doubleheader sweep, falling to Cal State Dominguez Hills 6-2 in the nightcap.

Dominguez Hills wasted no time, as Noah Karliner put them on the board in the first inning with a solo home run. The second inning proved costly for CPP, as the Toros plated four more runs, highlighted by a two-run double and another homer from Karliner, pushing the deficit to 5-0.

The Broncos got on the board in the fourth. Johnny Pappas drew a walk and came around to score when Julian Angulo roped an RBI double to left center. Malerba followed with a run-scoring single, cutting the gap to 5-2. However, Dominguez Hills answered immediately as they led off the bottom of the frame with a solo homer, stretching the lead back to four.

From there, both pitching staffs settled in. Broncos starter Tyler Reiter (0-5) turned in a solid effort despite the early struggles, tossing a complete game with six innings of work, allowing seven hits and three earned runs while striking out four. Despite Reiter's winless record, he has held opponents to four or less earned runs in five of his seven appearances this season.
