Broncos Drop Series Finale at Chico

CHICO, Calif. – Cal Poly Pomona baseball came up just short against No. 20 Chico State on Sunday afternoon, falling 7-5 in the series finale at Nettleton Stadium. It was the Broncos' first time being swept in a four-game series against Chico State since 2008.

The team's 6-11 record on the season isn't very telling of how well they've played to this point. All eight losses against DII opponents have come against Top 25 teams, as CPP currently has the 15th toughest schedule in the nation according to the NCAA (opponents having a combined .739 winning percentage). Furthermore, all of those losses have come by three runs or less, totaling a combined -19 run differential across those 11 games. This means CPP's losses this season, on average, are by less than two runs. If a few more balls drop in favor of the Green & Gold, that record could look a lot different.

The Broncos trailed early after the Wildcats scored four runs—three unearned—by the fourth inning. Evan Adolphus (0-2) took the loss, allowing just one earned run over four innings, while the bullpen worked to keep CPP in striking distance. Adolphus finished with two strikeouts and seven hits allowed on 61 pitches.

After falling behind 4-0, the Broncos roared back in the fifth when red-hot Brent Cota crushed a three-run homer to right field, bringing home Robbie Treto and Beau Betten to cut the deficit to one. However, Chico State responded in the bottom half, adding two runs with the help of a throwing error and an RBI single.

In the seventh, Betten made things interesting with a two-run blast to center, trimming the Wildcats' lead to 7-5. But despite putting runners on late, CPP couldn't break through against Chico's bullpen. Ruben Del Castillo had a strong outing from the pen, throwing 2.2 scoreless innings and striking out four while allowing just one hit.

Cota and Betten led the offense, each homering and driving in multiple runs, while Sebastian Arguelles and Julian Angulo contributed two hits apiece. Defensively, three errors allowed Chico State to take advantage of extra opportunities.

Up Next
The Broncos will return home next weekend with a series against Cal State San Bernardino (12-6, 4-4 CCAA) at Scolinos Field.

The last time the two squads played each other at Scolinos Field in 2023, it was the lowest-scoring four game series in either team's history. In four games, the two teams scored just 15 total runs, CPP with eight and CSUSB plating seven. The Broncos would win the series three games to one, by scores of 3-2 (walk off), 0-2, 2-1 (walk off), and 3-2.
