Broncos Unable to Silence Gators in Middle Innings

SAN FRANCISCO – Cal Poly Pomona baseball came out hot at the plate on Friday afternoon, but an early offensive burst wasn't enough to hold off a powerful San Francisco State lineup, as the Broncos dropped a 16-5 decision in game one of their CCAA series at Maloney Field. With the loss, the Broncos fall to 13-25 on the season and 10-19 in CCAA play.

The Green & Gold got on the board early, plating three runs in the top of the second. Robbie Treto was hit by a pitch to start the inning and later scored on an RBI single by Christian Gomez. A sacrifice fly by Clay Porter and a run-scoring single from Johnny Pappas capped off the big frame, giving Cal Poly Pomona a 3-0 advantage.

After San Francisco State cut into the lead with a run in the second, the Gators rallied for three runs in the fourth to take a 4-3 lead. The Broncos briefly tied the game in the fifth on Sebastian Arguelles' RBI single to center, and added one more in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Beau Betten to pull within two, 7-5.

That, however, would be the end of the scoring for Cal Poly Pomona, as the Gators' offense exploded for nine unanswered runs over the final three innings to put the game out of reach. The Gators' 22 hits was the most CPP has allowed in a game this season.

Despite the loss, the Broncos' offense showed life, collecting 14 hits. Arguelles led the charge with three hits and an RBI, while Tyler Chaffee matched him with a 3-for-4 performance and scored a run. Julian Angulo contributed two hits and scored once, and Porter tallied two more hits and an RBI.

On the mound, freshman Anthony Cosme (2-6) was charged with the loss after allowing seven earned runs over five innings and 99 pitches. The bullpen couldn't contain the Gators either, as each pitcher gave up at least two earned runs.
