Bronco Rally Falls Just Short in 5-4 Loss to Sonoma State

POMONA, Calif. — Cal Poly Pomona mounted a late comeback in front of their home crowd at Scolinos Field on Friday night, but ultimately fell just short in a 5-4 loss to Sonoma State. The Broncos out-hit the Seawolves 10-8 but were unable to overcome a three-run fifth inning by the Seawolves. With the loss, the Broncos fall to 13-29 on the season and 10-23 in CCAA play.

Joseph Romero made his first start of the season on the mound for CPP and showed early promise, holding Sonoma State to one run over the first four innings. However, control issues and timely Seawolf hitting in the fifth proved costly. Romero was tagged with the loss, his first of the season, after allowing four runs on three hits and four walks across 4.1 innings.

Brent Cota got the Broncos on the board in the second inning, lining a single up the middle to score Marco Malerba and tie the game at 1-1. The game remained knotted until the fifth, when Sonoma State capitalized on a pair of hit batters and a walk to load the bases. A ground out brought in the go-ahead run, followed by a two-run single to make it 4-1.

The Seawolves added one more in the sixth, but the Broncos refused to go quietly. In the bottom of the inning, Beau Betten roped a triple to left-center, scoring Johnny Pappas to trim the deficit to 5-2. The Broncos threatened again in the ninth. With two on and one out, Christian Gomez singled to right to score Gibbons, and Dominic Porter's steal of second base allowed Arguelles to come home, bringing CPP within one.

With the tying run in scoring position and one out, the Sonoma State closer induced a ground out and fly out to end the game. Aaron Ceniceros and Ruben Del Castillo were effective out of the pen for the Green & Gold, combining for just one earned run in 4.2 innings.
