Angulo and Chaffee Go Yard, Broncos are Unable to Hold Off East Bay in Series Opener

HAYWARD, Calif. – Cal Poly Pomona couldn't fend off a late rally from Cal State East Bay on Thursday afternoon, falling 6–5 in the final series opener of the 2025 season. Despite strong offensive showings from Julian Angulo and Tyler Chaffee, the Broncos dropped to 14-32 overall and 11-26 in conference play.

The Broncos wasted no time getting on the board as Angulo launched a solo home run in the top of the first inning, giving CPP an early 1–0 lead. It was Angulo's team-leading sixth long ball of the season and the eighth of his career. The Pioneers answered in the second, capitalizing on a wild pitch and a groundout to claim a 2-1 lead.

After a quiet stretch, the Broncos erupted in the fifth. Robbie Treto walked to lead off the inning, and Chaffee followed with a two-run blast to left center, his first of the season. Moments later, Angulo delivered again with a two-out RBI single, plating Johnny Pappas and putting the Broncos back in front, 4–2.

On the mound, Anthony Cosme and Joseph Romero combined to hold East Bay in check through five innings. Romero tallied three strikeouts over 4.1 innings of work. But the Pioneers chipped away in the sixth and seventh, tying the game at 4–4.

In the top of the eighth, Cal Poly Pomona briefly regained the lead. Beau Betten doubled down the left field line and came home on a sacrifice fly from Brent Cota, pushing the Broncos back in front at 5–4.

However that lead wouldn't hold for long, as two errors by CPP and three hits by the Pioneers in the bottom of the eighth proved decisive. Two runs came across to score, both unearned, allowing East Bay to take the final lead of the afternoon - charging reliever Sean Suriyaniel with the loss.

The Broncos tallied nine hits in the loss, led by Angulo, Chaffee, and Betten, but couldn't overcome costly defensive miscues and timely East Bay hitting in the late innings.
