INDIANAPOLIS – The Broncos men's track and field team is set to compete at the NCAA Division II National Championships, as announced Tuesday afternoon. The national meet will be hosted by Colorado State University Pueblo at the CSU Pueblo Thunderbowl.
Eight athletes will represent the program on the national stage, with strong showings both on the track and in field events.
Alessio Sommacal leads the group with a qualification in the 400-meter hurdles. Ranked first in the nation, Sommacal enters the championship meet after posting the second-fastest time in school history earlier this season. This will mark his fourth appearance at the NCAA Championships, adding a wealth of experience to the team.
Nnamdi Onwaeze will compete in the 110-meter hurdles after setting a personal best that ranks fourth in program history. This marks his second appearance at the national meet, both times in this event.
The 4x400-meter relay team of Sommacal,
Leroy Crook Jr.,
Joshua Morinaga, and
Camden Patterson earned their ticket to Pueblo by breaking the school record for the second time this season, doing so just this past weekend. Crook, Morinaga, and Patterson will each be making their NCAA debut.
In the field events, three athletes will make their national debuts.
Kailen Smith has qualified in the high jump and is currently ranked ninth in the nation. He ranks second in program history and has consistently hit the NCAA provisional mark throughout the season.
Collin Joyce, a redshirt freshman, will compete in the triple jump after a standout year that saw him climb to fifth all-time in school history. Joining him in making a first appearance at nationals is
Gavin Hanes, who qualified in the pole vault with a mark set just this past weekend. Hanes also ranks fifth in program history.
The Broncos have a proud tradition of excellence at the national level, with nine individual NCAA champions in program history. The most recent title came in 2015 when Justin Ellerbee won the pole vault. This year's group will look to build on that legacy in Pueblo.
