INDIANAPOLIS - The women's track and field team is set to compete at the NCAA Division II National Championships, as officially announced Tuesday afternoon. The prestigious meet will be hosted by Colorado State University Pueblo at the CSU Pueblo Thunderbowl.
Four standout student-athletes will represent the Broncos on the national stage, each qualifying in individual events and making program history in the process.
Leading the group is
Neshara Smith, who returns to nationals with valuable postseason experience. Smith was named an All-American earlier this year at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships and will compete in the 100-meter hurdles. She currently ranks second all-time in program history in the event.
Vivian Martinez earned her spot just this past weekend with a record-breaking performance in the 1500 meters. Martinez shattered a nine-year-old school record by three seconds and slashed an impressive eight seconds off her personal best.
Also punching her ticket this weekend was
Isabelle Carreon, who broke her own school record in the pole vault to secure her place at nationals.
Rounding out the national qualifiers is
Arissa Hatcher, who will compete in the 800 meters. Hatcher currently holds the school record in the event, cementing her place among the program's elite middle-distance runners.
The Broncos' women's track and field program boasts a proud tradition of excellence, having claimed 11 individual national titles in its history. The most recent came in 1998, when Ruth Moecks captured the triple jump crown and Tabreshia Lawrence won the 400-meter hurdles.
The team now looks to add to that legacy in Pueblo as they take on the nation's best.
