PUEBLO, Colo. - Cal Poly Pomona Track & Field wrapped up its season in memorable fashion at the NCAA National Championships, setting three school records and earning five All-American honors during a standout weekend of competition.
Senior
Isabelle Carreon opened the final day of the meet for the Broncos in the pole vault, placing 10th and earning second-team All-American recognition. Carreon said, "Competing at nationals felt like the cherry on top to my collegiate track career. Being able to compete against some of the nations best athletes was the best experience."
Kailen Smith represented CPP in the high jump, finishing 13th overall with a mark of 2.07 meters.
In the 100m hurdles,
Neshara Smith delivered a strong 6th-place finish, adding another All-American honor to her resume. Smith shared, "This has been the most difficult season of my life, yet at the same time the most fulfilling. I am thankful to have such a great team and staff that support me and encourage me even in my crazy moments. This year has taught me patience, determination, and gratitude towards myself, the sport and the people that surround me. I am thankful to have had such a successful season both indoor and outdoor."
Nnamdi Onwaeze also placed 6th in the 110m hurdles, earning All-American honors with a consistent and determined season. Onwaeze said, "This season has been a blessing. I've been competing at a high level and ran consistently to make it to nationals. My coaches and teammates helped along the way to be an All-American. My family and friends also supported and help me stay focused and motivated to achieve my goals. This Nationals meet was a wonderful experience one I will never forget!"
Alessio Sommacal capped off his career with a 5th-place finish in the 400m hurdles, setting a new personal best and claiming his first All-American title. Sommacal said, "Finishing this incredible journey as a Bronco with a trophy means everything to me. I qualified for the nationals meet every year and in multiple events, but for different reasons I have never made a final before this year. Getting a PR in the final and winning this trophy is the cherry on top. I could not be happier with this and I'm very grateful for everyone that helped get here."
Head coach
Chris Bradford praised the team's resilience and leadership: "We had a very special weekend with a very special group of athletes. To finally see Alessio and Nnamdi on the award stand receiving their all American trophies were really amazing moments. Neshara continues to prove that she's one of the best in the country whenever she steps on the track and CJ was such a fun moment to be a part of and he has such a bright future after his fifth place finish. What was most special to me though was seeing our seniors Alessio, Kai, Camden, Nnamdi and Isabelle compete at the NCAA championships and lead this team both on and off the track."
With multiple top finishes and record-setting performances, the Broncos closed out the 2025 season on a high note — making history and laying the foundation for future success.
