TURLOCK, Calif. – The Cal Poly Pomona men's track and field team delivered a standout performance at the CCAA Championship, finishing second overall out of eight competing teams. The Broncos made a powerful statement on the final day of the meet, with 11 athletes reaching the podium and multiple performances meeting NCAA Provisional qualifying standards.
In the field events,
Jered Beasley secured second place in the pole vault with a clearance of 4.80 meters, earning 7 points for the team.
Cory Gamero added 8 points with a second-place finish in the discus, throwing 49.29 meters. In the high jump,
Kailen Smith came out on top with a winning mark of 2.12 meters, earning 10 points and hitting the NCAA Provisional qualifying mark.
The javelin throw saw a strong showing from the Broncos as well, with
Matthew Mannino placing second with a distance of 57.41 meters and
John Dvorak close behind in third at 56.93 meters. Dvorak's performance also secured a spot on the CPP all-time top 10 list.
On the track, the 4x100-meter relay team of
Alessio Sommacal,
Nnamdi Onwaeze,
Colin Quinn, and
Lorenzo Boyd sprinted to a first-place finish in 40.56 seconds. The time not only earned 10 points but also qualified for NCAA Provisional standards and made the CPP top 10 list.
The Broncos dominated the 110-meter hurdles, sweeping the top three spots.
Nnamdi Onwaeze led the way with a time of 14.11 seconds, followed by
Alessio Sommacal in 14.22 and
Christian Baker in 14.55. Both Onwaeze and Sommacal's times met NCAA Provisional marks. In the 400-meter hurdles, Sommacal continued his impressive weekend with a second-place finish in 51.24 seconds, again hitting the NCAA Provisional mark.
To close out the meet, the 4x400-meter relay team of Sommacal,
Leroy Crook Jr.,
Joshua Morinaga, and
Camden Patterson finished second in 3:12.26. Their performance earned 10 more points for the team and added another NCAA Provisional qualifying time to the Broncos' total.
