SEOUL, South Korea – Cody Ponce's stellar season with the Hanwha Eagles of the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) reached a new height on Monday, being named a KBO All-Star for the first time in his career. The all-star event will take place between the Nanum All-Stars and Dream All-Stars at Daejeon Hanwha Life Ballpark, the Eagles' new home stadium, on Saturday, July 12
th, at 2:00 AM PT, or 6:00 PM local time.
The Upland native was selected as the Nanum starting pitcher for the All-Star Game with 1,625,259 fan votes, the third-most of any player or pitcher selected for either team.
A member of the Cal Poly Pomona baseball team from 2013-15, Ponce has put together one of the most dominant seasons by a starting pitcher in KBO history, owning a 2.04 ERA with a perfect 10-0 record across 101.2 innings. The KBO League MVP for the month of April has struck out 141 batters across 16 appearances while walking just 23, resulting in a league-best 0.85 WHIP. He currently leads the entire KBO in ERA, strikeouts, WHIP, and wins.
Ponce made history last month, striking out 18 batters to set the KBO single-game record. Two starts later on May 28th, he became the fastest pitcher in KBO history to reach 100 strikeouts in a season, doing so in just his 11th appearance. He is currently one of the favorites to win the Choi Dong-won Award, the KBO League equivalent of the Cy Young Award.
The former Bronco's dominant performance this season has helped lead the Hanwha Eagles to first place in the KBO standings with a 44-30 record.
