Broncos Battle to 2-2 Draw at Colorado School of Mines

GOLDEN, Colo. - In an intense and highly physical contest, Cal Poly Pomona and Colorado School of Mines played to a dramatic 2-2 draw on Sunday afternoon. The match featured two penalty kicks, multiple momentum shifts, and key performances on both sides, with neither team able to find a decisive edge over the full 90 minutes.

The game opened with an aggressive tone, as early fouls set the stage for what would become a fierce matchup. Cal Poly Pomona struck first in the 7th minute after a yellow card was issued to Mines. The foul led to a penalty, and junior forward Marvin Gamez stepped up to bury it, giving the Broncos a 1-0 lead. From there, CPP continued pressing with attacking intent, registering seven shots in the first half, but they were repeatedly denied by the Mines goalkeeper.

Colorado School of Mines found their equalizer in the 35th minute. Just nine minutes after entering the game, the Orediggers capitalized and slotted home a composed finish to tie the game at 1-1. Mines grew into the game after the goal, using substitutions to rotate fresh legs and test the Broncos' back line. Despite chances at both ends, the teams went into halftime level.

The second half began with Mines looking more confident in possession. In the 62nd minute, they found space following a corner kick and scored their second goal of the match, giving the home side a 2-1 advantage. It appeared Mines might have taken control, but Cal Poly Pomona responded just minutes later. A second penalty was awarded, and Daniel Hernandez converted from the spot in the 71st minute to level the score once again.

The final 20 minutes were filled with tension as both teams scrambled for a winner. The match saw a total of 25 fouls, reflecting the physical and hard-fought nature of the battle. CPP pushed hard in the closing stages, with Sam Lena and Gamez creating late chances, but the Mines goalkeeper held firm.

Statistically, Cal Poly Pomona outshot Mines 17-7, including six shots on goal to Mines' four. Both teams showed quality and resilience in a well-balanced match that fittingly ended in a draw.
