CPP Stays Perfect with 3-0 Shutout of MSU Denver

POMONA, Calif. - A commanding 3-0 win over MSU Denver on Sunday afternoon at Kellogg Stadium extended the No. 2 Broncos' perfect start to the 2025 season and pushed their overall unbeaten streak to 16 matches. The Broncos controlled the match from the opening whistle, outshooting the Roadrunners 20-3 and holding them without a single shot on goal.

After generating steady pressure throughout the opening half, the Broncos finally broke through in the 27th minute when Liberty Ortiz scored her first goal of the season. The goal came moments after back-to-back corner kicks in the 26th minute, as Ortiz rose above the defense and headed the ball into the net to cap a strong attacking sequence. Cal Poly Pomona took a 1-0 lead into the break, having forced MSU Denver's goalkeeper into four first-half saves.

The second half saw more of the same from the home side. Just under 10 minutes in, Vanessa Cruz was fouled in the box, and she calmly converted the resulting penalty kick in the 55th minute to double the lead. Cruz was a constant threat throughout her 57 minutes on the field, recording a game-high five shots and two shots on goal. Abria Smith sealed the win in the 83rd minute with a composed finish inside the area, scoring her first of the season to make it 3-0.

The Broncos were just as dominant defensively. Goalkeeper Jenna Tetrault had a quiet afternoon between the posts, playing all 90 minutes without needing to make a save. Cal Poly Pomona's defense completely shut down MSU Denver, limiting them to three shots total and none after halftime. CPP also earned six corner kicks while not allowing any to the visitors.
