2026 Preseason Poll

Baseball Picked Fourth in 2026 CCAA Coaches Preseason Poll

1/22/2026 12:30:00 PM

ALISO VIEJO, Calif. – Cal Poly Pomona baseball was picked fourth in the 2026 California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Coaches Preseason Poll, as announced by the conference office on Thursday morning. The Broncos received 56 points behind Cal State Monterey Bay (81), Chico State (61), and Cal State Dominguez Hills (58).

The Broncos are coming off an uncharacteristic 2025 season, where they failed to reach the postseason for the first time since 2013. Though they finished last in the conference standings, dropping 18 games by only one or two runs, the team looks to return to its winning ways with a fresh crop of talent, bringing in 20 newcomers for this season.

"The new players have done a really good job this fall and heading into the spring," said head coach Randy Betten, now in his 15th season at the helm. "They're a super competitive group that will push the program forward."

2026 CCAA Baseball Preseason Poll
1. Cal State Monterey Bay – 81 pts (9)
2. Chico State – 61 pts
3. Cal State Dominguez Hills – 58 pts
4. Cal Poly Pomona – 56 pts
5. Cal State San Marcos – 49 pts
6. Cal State LA – 34 pts
7. Cal State San Bernardino – 32 pts
8. Cal State East Bay – 24 pts
9. Stanislaus State – 10 pts

The Broncos will be returning two big bats in the middle of their lineup: 2024 All-West Region First Team honoree Jack Sanders, who missed nearly all of last season due to injury, and 2025 All-CCAA Honorable Mention Julian Angulo. Other players to watch include redshirt seniors Sebastian Arguelles and Diego Murillo, freshman catcher Daniel Luther, and junior transfer Tyler Garcia.

When asked about the team's strengths, Betten said, "We will be built on high-quality pitching and team defense" - a formula synonymous with CPP's success over the past decade.

On the mound, the Broncos return several veteran arms, including Dylan Esquival, Andrew Cambell, Anthony Vasquez, and Colt Tucker, along with sophomore Anthony Cosme, who ranked second on the team with 59.2 innings pitched last season. Additionally, nine new pitchers are joining the staff - two freshmen and seven transfers.

Cal Poly Pomona will open the season with four non-conference series against Azusa Pacific, Colorado Mesa, Hope International, and Colorado State Pueblo, with 11 of their first 14 games played at home. CCAA action begins on the road against Cal State San Bernardino on March 6th, before the Broncos host Chico State for their CCAA home opener on March 13th.

New this year, only five teams will qualify for the CCAA Tournament following the departure of San Francisco State and Sonoma State, reducing the conference to nine teams. The newly modified five-team tournament will feature a single-elimination game on day one between the two lowest seeds. The remaining four teams will then be reseeded for a double-elimination tournament, with the champion receiving the CCAA's automatic berth to the NCAA Tournament. The 2026 CCAA Tournament will be held at Fiscalini Field in San Bernardino.
