HAYWARD, Calif. - Cal Poly Pomona battled through a demanding road test Sunday afternoon but came up short against No. 12 Cal State East Bay, falling 70-59 in CCAA action. The setback drops the Broncos to 8-4 overall and 3-3 in conference play, as a closely contested game tilted in the Pioneers' favor after halftime.
The Broncos set the tone early with strong interior play and efficient offense. Kevin Simeth and Zach Broadous scored early around the rim, while Demarreya Lewis-Cooper knocked down timely shots to help CPP establish an early lead. Cal Poly Pomona shot well in the first half and stayed aggressive on the glass, but East Bay responded with steady execution and late momentum. A three-pointer in the closing seconds of the half allowed the Pioneers to take a 43-38 edge into the break.
CPP continued to battle coming out of halftime, quickly cutting the deficit behind energy plays from Edric Dennis and strong finishes in transition. The Broncos trimmed the lead to one point multiple times, with Broadous and Malcolm Bell converting inside to keep the pressure on. Defensively, CPP forced stops and turnovers, giving itself chances to swing the momentum.
However, the second half proved challenging offensively. Cal Poly Pomona struggled to find consistency from the perimeter and left points at the free-throw line, while East Bay capitalized on key possessions and gradually built separation. Despite continued effort on both ends, the Broncos were unable to regain the lead in the final stretch as the Pioneers closed out the game from the line.
