POMONA, Calif. - Cal Poly Pomona dropped a 70-53 decision to the Stanislaus State Warriors on Thursday night, falling to 12-11 overall and 7-10 in CCAA play. Offensive struggles and turnovers proved costly, as the Broncos were unable to overcome a first-half deficit despite competing stretches after the break.
The opening half was tightly contested in the early minutes. Cal Poly Pomona grabbed the first points of the night and stayed within a possession through much of the first five minutes. However, Stanislaus State began to find rhythm in transition, converting steals into fastbreak opportunities and second-chance baskets. A mid-half run fueled by perimeter shooting and points in the paint allowed the Warriors to stretch the margin to double digits.
The Broncos found success attacking inside, with Malcolm Bell and Kevin Simeth providing production around the rim. Bell was aggressive getting to the free-throw line, while Simeth controlled the glass and finished through contact. Stanislaus State carried a 38-29 lead into halftime after closing the period with timely baskets in transition.
Out of the break, Cal Poly Pomona showed renewed energy. Simeth scored early to trim the deficit to seven, and the Broncos continued to battle on the boards to generate second-chance looks. A three-pointer from Michael Saba later in the half briefly sparked hopes of a push, but the Warriors responded with consecutive perimeter shots to extend the lead back to double figures.
Each attempt to close the gap was met with steady execution from Stanislaus State, which maintained control by capitalizing on turnovers and converting key opportunities inside. The Broncos struggled to find consistency from long range and were unable to string together the stops needed to mount a full comeback.
