POMONA, Calif. - Cal Poly Pomona baseball delivered a resilient win to close out the series against Hope International on Sunday afternoon, winning by a score of 4-2. Behind timely hitting and strong pitching, the Broncos were able to salvage the series and improve to 6-4 on the season.
Â
After falling behind 1-0 in the third, the Broncos responded with a clutch offensive surge in the middle innings. CPP scratched across two in the fifth on some two-out magic, after a
Jack Sanders hit by pitch and a
Tyler Blade single to right field to put two runners on. Blade then stole second base to put two runners in scoring position, and a HIU error and
Sebastian Arguelles RBI single to left would give the Broncos a 2-1 lead.
Â
The decisive rally continued in the sixth inning as
Daniel Ruiz delivered a run-scoring single, plating
Ashton Romero, and Blade followed with an RBI knock of his own to extend the lead to 4-1.
Â
Blade, a redshirt freshman out of Corona, led the Bronco offense with a game-high three hits and an RBI. Arguelles added two hits including a key RBI single, while Romero also contributed with a pinch-hit single that would prove to be the game-deciding run.
Â
On the mound,
Andrew Campbell earned his second win of the season with six strong innings, allowing only one run on five hits while striking out four and limiting the Royals' offense.
Colt Tucker and
Rex Jarcy each provided quality relief, and
Geo Hernandez recorded the save with a scoreless ninth – his first as a Bronco.
Â
Cal Poly Pomona's defense was sharp in critical moments, turning two double plays to limit Hope International threats. Despite a late RBI single by Nathan Estrada in the eighth, the Bronco pitching got out of tight jams to secure the victory.
