TURLOCK, Calif. - Cal Poly Pomona baseball opened its conference road series at Stanislaus State with a strong win on Friday night, launching three home runs for a 10-4 victory. With the win, the Broncos improve to 16-7 on the season and 8-1 in CCAA play, while also improving to an impressive 7-1 on the road.
The Broncos wasted little time setting the tone, jumping on the board in the first when
Julian Angulo drove in
Daniel Ruiz with a single through the left side. Cal Poly Pomona added two more runs in the second, highlighted by
Evan Nahra's leadoff double and
Diego Murillo's sacrifice fly, then pushed its lead to 4-1 in the third when
Tyler Blade came home on a Stanislaus State error.
Jack Sanders would extend that lead in the fourth, belting his eighth home run of the season to right field to make it 5-1.
After the Warriors pulled within one in the fourth inning, the Broncos answered immediately with a Nahra leadoff solo shot to deep center in the next frame. Two more runs would come home off the bat of Nahra in the sixth with a two-run double to center field, extending the lead to 8-4.
Sebastian Arguelles then capped the scoring with a two-run homer in the ninth.
Nahra led the offensive surge with a perfect 4-for-4 night, scoring three times and driving in three runs while doubling twice and homering. Arguelles finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored, two RBI and a homer, while Sanders went 2-for-5 with a homer and an RBI. Angulo also added two hits and an RBI.
On the mound,
Andrew Campbell earned his CCAA-leading sixth win after allowing four runs (one earned) in 5.0 innings of work, striking out four batters while walking five. Despite allowing some traffic on the bases, the veteran right hander limited damage to keep the Broncos within striking distance as the offense built its lead.
Out of the bullpen,
Anthony Cosme delivered a dominant closing performance, tossing four shutout innings to secure the victory. The sophomore right-hander allowed just two hits while striking out seven and issuing just one free pass. Cosme retired 11 of the 14 batters he faced, halting any momentum and earning his first career save.
