SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The Cal Poly Pomona baseball team opened CCAA play with an 8-6 road victory over Cal State San Bernardino on Friday afternoon, improving to 9-6 on the season and 3-1 on the road.
The Broncos set the tone early, capitalizing on a throwing error in the first inning to plate two unearned runs and grab the early advantage. After the Coyotes answered with a run in the bottom of the half, the Broncos erupted for five runs in the top of the third.
Jack Sanders,
Austin Duarte, and
Julian Angulo sparked the rally with three straight singles to open the frame. Then came the signature moment of the game: back-to-back home runs from
Bryan Richman and
Daniel Luther on back-to-back pitches, extending the lead to 7-1.
Cal State San Bernardino chipped away with a multi-run fifth inning, but Pomona responded with poise on the mound. Starting pitcher
Andrew Campbell battled through five innings to earn the victory, allowing five earned runs with four strikeouts and one free pass for his fourth win of the season. The bullpen combination of
Rex Jarcy and
Gavin Smith provided stability in the late innings before
Sean Suriyaniel closed the door in the ninth to collect his second save of the season.
Offensively, the Broncos tallied 10 hits on the afternoon.
Daniel Ruiz and Sanders each recorded two hits, while the three through eight hitters in the lineup each added one hit to the scorebook.
With the win, Cal Poly Pomona builds early momentum in conference play and sets the tone for the rest of the series against the Coyotes.
