SEASIDE, Calif. – Cal Poly Pomona baseball jumped out to an early lead, but a series of middle-inning surges by a nationally-ranked Cal State Monterey Bay squad proved decisive in a 17-8 setback on Thursday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex. With the loss, the Broncos fall to 19-12 overall and 11-6 in CCAA play, holding a one-game lead over the Otters in the conference standings.
The Broncos wasted no time getting on the board, as
Julian Angulo launched a two-run home run in the first inning to give CPP an early lead, marking his fifth of the season. The momentum continued in the third, when RBI singles from
Jack Sanders and
Tyler Blade extended the lead to 4-1. Pomona collected 10 hits on the day, with
Daniel Ruiz and
Austin Duarte each recording two-hit performances. Duarte also scored twice and reached base three times, helping fuel the Broncos' early offense.
After Monterey Bay answered with big fifth and sixth innings, the Broncos continued to battle. Ruiz delivered an RBI knock as part of his two-hit effort, while
Bryan Richman added a double. Pinch hitter
Dominic De Feo delivered the biggest swing of the game for the Broncos, crushing a three-run home run in the top of the ninth to cap the scoring, and also marking the first long ball of his Bronco career.
The Bronco pitching staff struggled to get through the middle innings, allowing 15 runs in a three-inning span. Starting pitcher
Andrew Campbell was solid through four, allowing just one run. However, the Otter bats broke through in the fifth, plating four runs and ultimately giving Campbell his second loss of the season.
