POMONA, Calif. - Cal Poly Pomona men's track and field competed in two of Southern California's premier meets this past weekend, competing at both the Bryan Clay Invitational (April 16–18 in Azusa) and the 66th Annual Mt. SAC Relays (April 15–18 in Walnut). The Broncos demonstrated depth across sprints, distance, relays, and field events while posting four NCAA Division II qualifying marks.
At the Bryan Clay Invitational, Cal Poly Pomona's distance group set the tone.
Ricardo Vargas led the way with an NCAA Division II qualifying time of 29:46.40 in the 10,000 meters, marking the third-fastest time in program history. In the 1500 meters,
Juan Ramos and
Jimmy Guerrero both finished under 3:50, reinforcing the Broncos' consistency in the middle-distance ranks.
The 4x100 relay team turned in an impressive 41.05 to finish fourth, while
Jayden Newkirk paced the sprint group in the 200 meters at 21.45. In the field,
Gavin Binning led a deep long jump group with a 7.14m effort, placing 16
th.
At the Mt. SAC Relays, the Broncos had a competitive showing across the board.
Daniel Echeveste captured the 5,000-meter title in 14:45.14, while
Luke D'Elia placed second in the 10,000 meters at 30:52.91. The relay group of
Thenuk Chandrasekera,
Ekene Onwaeze,
Jayden Newkirk, and
Gavin Binning impressed with a 40.71 finish in the 4x100, marking the ninth-fastest time in program history.
In the field events,
Harry Chen (high jump),
Jered Beasley (pole vault), and
Collin Joyce (triple jump) each recorded NCAA Division II qualifying marks. Across both meets, the Broncos recorded two record book performances, 10 personal records, and met four NCAA provisional qualifying marking.
