SAN MARCOS, Calif. - Cal Poly Pomona turned in a strong and well-rounded performance on the women's side to open the 2026 CCAA Track & Field Championships, currently sitting in second place behind Chico State with 40 points.
The Broncos were powered by a standout effort from senior
Neshara Smith, who currently sits in first place in the heptathlon standings with 3166 points. Smith demonstrated her versatility with event wins in the 100-meter hurdles and 200 meters while also adding a victory in the long jump, making her one of the most impactful performers of the day with 10 points toward the team total.
In the field, Smith's win in the long jump led a group of Broncos scorers, while
Halle McDaniels and
Kirssy Reyes-Walter placed second and third in the discus, respectively, to further boost the team total.
Shannon Gaitan also contributed points with a fifth-place finish in the pole vault.
On the track,
Jessica James led the sprint squad with a dominant qualifying performance in the 100 meters and the fastest preliminary time in the 400 meters. She was joined by multiple teammates advancing to finals, highlighting the team's depth. In the distance events,
Milca Osorio and
Jubilee Cisneros scored valuable points in the 10,000 meters, seeing contributions across all event groups.
