SAN MARCOS, Calif. - Cal Poly Pomona holds a 12-point advantage in the CCAA championships headed into the final day, thanks to numerous strong performances on Friday. The Broncos leaned on their depth, advancing multiple athletes through prelims while also scoring 68.5 points in finals competition.
Jessica James set the tone on the track, qualifying first in both the 100 and 400 while also posting the second-fastest time in the 200 prelims, reinforcing her status as one of the meet's premier sprinters. She was joined by a deep sprint corps, including
Samira Stevenson in the 100 and a trio of Broncos advancing in the 400.
In the hurdles,
Neshara Smith led the way with the top qualifying mark in the 100-meter hurdles before later adding major points in the field, winning the long jump and high jump to bring her point total to 30 – nearly double the next closest athlete on the women's side.
Distance events provided valuable scoring as well, with
Miranda Palacios and
Galilea Jimenez both landing on the podium in the 3000-meter steeplechase, while the 10,000 meters added additional team points through a trio of finishers.
In the field, Cal Poly Pomona's throws group impressed with multiple podium finishes in both the discus and hammer. Combined with strong showings in the jumps, the Broncos closed Friday in a strong team position, as they look to claim their fifth consecutive title tomorrow.
