SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Women's track and field came within four points of their fifth consecutive CCAA title on Saturday, but ultimately fell just short to Chico State. The Broncos captured 209.5 points, their most since 2022, with 125 more points than the third place finisher.
Cal Poly Pomona was powered by an unbelievable showing from senior
Neshara Smith, who captured conference titles in the 100-meter hurdles, high jump, long jump, and heptathlon, while also winning the High Point Award for the second straight year and being named CCAA Field Athlete of the Meet. Smith becomes just the second Bronco to ever capture the two major awards, after Ayana Fields did so on the track in 2022 and 2023.
On the track,
Jessica James anchored a strong sprint group, claiming the 400-meter title with an NCAA Division II mark while adding a runner-up finish in the 200 meters and scoring in the 100 meters. James also played a key role in both championship relay teams, as Cal Poly Pomona swept the 4x100 and 4x400 relays with NCAA Division II qualifying times. James was named CCAA Track Athlete of the Meet, the first time a Bronco has won since Fields in 2023.
In the middle distances,
Arissa Hatcher led the way with a third-place finish in the 800 meters. Field events further highlighted the Broncos' balance, with
Clara Mackison winning the javelin with an NCAA Division II mark, while the throws group added multiple podium finishes in the shot put, discus, and hammer.
Despite coming up just short of the conference title, the Broncos had a successful weekend that featured eight CCAA champions, eight record book performances, and 23 All-CCAA honorees.
