SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – Cal Poly Pomona baseball defeated Cal State San Marcos on Thursday at Fiscalini Field, collecting 18 hits en route to the 12-6 win. The team advances to the winner's bracket of the CCAA Tournament, and will play the winner of Cal State Monterey Bay and Cal State San Bernardino on Friday.
The Broncos wasted no time setting the tone, erupting for six runs in the top of the first inning.
Sebastian Arguelles started the scoring with a double down the right field line, scoring
Jack Sanders and
Austin Duarte. Just a few batters later, redshirt freshman
Tyler Blade had the swing of the game with a grand slam to right center, his fourth home run of the season, giving the Broncos a quick 6-0 lead.
The Broncos continued to add on in the next two innings, plating one run in the second on a Sanders solo shot, his 14
th of the season. In the third,
Diego Murillo had an RBI double followed by a two-run single off the bat of Duarte to give CPP a commanding 10-1 lead.
In the top of the fourth,
Julian Angulo homered to left center on a 1-0 count, his sixth of the season, to extend the lead to 11-1.
On the mound, Bronco ace
Andrew Campbell picked up his 11
th win of the season, delivering a quality start with 6.0 innings pitched, four strikeouts, five hits allowed, and just one earned run on 91 pitches.
Gavin Smith threw a scoreless inning in relief, followed by
Andrew Dusablon throwing the final two innings.
Cal State San Marcos mounted a late push with two runs in the eighth and three in the ninth, but the Broncos' timely hitting in the early innings proved to be the difference.

The Broncos will play the winner of Cal State San Bernardino and Cal State Monterey Bay tomorrow, May 8
th, at 3:00 PM. If they win, they will advance to the championship on Saturday. If they lose, they will play immediately after at 7:00 PM in an elimination game.
