Six-Run Inning Not Enough as Broncos Fall to Coyotes in CCAA Title Game

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - Despite a six-run outburst in the first inning, Cal Poly Pomona could not hold off a persistent Cal State San Bernardino offense in a 9-6 loss in the CCAA Tournament Championship Game. The title marked the first for the Coyotes in 24 years, as they received the CCAA's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.

The Broncos, the designated home team for the game, fell behind 2-0 in the top of the first after the Coyotes plated two runs on four hits. CPP responded in a big way with six runs on six hits in the bottom of the frame, including home runs from both Evan Nahra and Tyler Blade.

Unfortunately for the Broncos, their offense would immediately cool off over the remaining eight innings. Only Julian Angulo and Gage Gonzales collected hits the rest of the way, coming on a double in the bottom of the second and a single in the bottom of the sixth, respectively.

After three innings without a run, CSUSB got back on the board in the fifth with two runs on two hits to cut the lead to 6-4. An inning later, they plated two more runs on two hits to erase the Broncos' lead and tie the game at 6-6.

Cal Poly Pomona's pitching and defense fought off several scoring opportunities in the seventh and eighth innings, escaping bases-loaded jams in both frames. However, in the ninth, the Yotes capitalized with back-to-back RBI doubles to center field, regaining a 9-6 lead. The Broncos went down in order in the ninth, giving CSUSB its first conference tournament title since 2002.

Matthew Leyva worked 5.0 innings on the mound, allowing five earned runs on seven hits while tying a season-high with eight strikeouts. Rex Jarcy tossed 2.0 scoreless innings in relief, followed by Sean Suriyaniel, who threw the final 2.0 innings and took the loss.

Cal Poly Pomona finished with eight hits and stranded seven runners, while CSUSB totaled 15 hits and consistently threatened throughout, leaving 12 on base.

After the game, Sebastian Arguelles, Julian Angulo, Andrew Campbell, Austin Duarte, and Tyler Blade were named to the CCAA All-Tournament Team.
