Roster / Results & Statistics / Photos
The Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team concluded the 1997-98 season with an overall record of 15-12 and a 5-7 record against CCAA teams to finish tied for fifth in the conference.
Tom Marshall, the eighth head coach in the history of the program, coached his fourth and final season with the 1997-98 squad. Marshall finished his stint with a 63-44 record overall and a 20-28 record in CCAA play.
Perhaps the most remarkable feat completed during this season was senior guard Terryl Woolery's unprecedented accomplishment in CPP history, and it has not been repeated since. During his final season, Woolery not only led the Broncos in points, averaging 17.7 per game, but he also had the team-high in rebounds per game and assists per game, with 7.0 and 3.5, respectively.
In the record book, Woolery had the eighth-highest season point total with 479 points and the fifth-highest career point total (965). However, his best marks occurred on defense where he became the Broncos' all-time steals leader with 187 for his career, and on offense, he finished with the second-highest CPP total for free throws made in a career (233).
Also making their mark on defense was sophomore forward Terrell Davis, who had the third-most blocks for a CPP player in a season with 43, and with two seasons of eligibility remaining, finished the season in the No. 2 slot on the all-time career blocks list, just one block shy of tying Gregg Brofer's career total (77). Davis would become the all-time blocks leader in the following season.
From 3-point land, the Broncos were a force to be reckoned with. Junior point guard Shane Lantz ended his three seasons with the Broncos with the second-most 3-point field goal attempts (253). He made 100 of those attempts to record the fifth-best 3-point field goal percentage for a career (.395) while sophomore guard Julian Hammond finished the season just ahead of Lantz in fifth in that category, making 49 of 120 attempts (.408). Woolery had the fourth-most attempts from the arc in a career (188).
As a team, the Broncos recorded their highest totals ever in 3-point field goals made (161) and 3-point field goals attempted (459).
