Roster / Results & Statistics / Photos

The Cal Poly Pomona men's basketball team finished the 1996-97 season with an overall record of 16-11 and a 5-7 record in CCAA play to finish fifth in the conference.

Junior guard Terryl Woolery led the Broncos in points, averaging 18 per game during the 27-game season. Making Woolery's trip to the hoop possible on many of those points was senior guard John Miller, who averaged a team-high 4.1 assists per game. Though he played only one season for CPP, YEAR POSITION Scott Charity racked up a team-high 6.1 rebounds per game.

With this season, Woolery set a record for steals in a season with 109, which still stands, and ended the season third all-time in a career for that statistic. In a game against Cal State Bakersfield, Woolery tied the third-highest CPP game point total ever recorded when he scored 38 against the Roadrunners.

Meanwhile, Miller added another season among the top 10 CPP seasons for steals, finishing the year with a seventh-best total of 59, while becoming the all-time career steals leader (128).

Charity tied former player Gregg Brofer's single-season blocks record of 47, a record that has not been matched or exceeded since. Even more impressive was that his season total also cracked the top five on the all-time career blocks list, placing fifth all-time. With respect to game records, Charity set a record for a CPP player when he recorded eight blocks against Grand Canyon. The record stands to this day.

Also, junior guard Shane Lantz set a season record for 3-point field goals attempted (129) and had the third-highest season total for 3-point field goals made (48). Woolery and junior guard Ricky Blackmon tied for the 10th-best total of 3-point field goals made with 31.

As a whole, the Broncos had a record 12 blocks in a game against Cal State Dominguez Hills and had a program-high 28 3-point field goal attempts in a game against Cal State L.A. The blocks-in-a-game record still stands.

At season's end, Woolery became the first CPP player to earn All-Region honors in five years.
